Mark O’Gorman was Creative Spark’s Artist-in-Residence from November 1st to December 31st, 2017. Mark graduated Ballyfermot College of Further Education in 2014 with a HND in illustration before being awarded a BFA from the National College of Art and Design in 2016. Mark’s time in NCAD involved collage and screenprint, gaining lots of experience with screenprinting and taking part in three group shows around Dublin at The Mart Gallery, Pallas Projects, and the NCAD itself.
His work combines painting and silkscreen to explore society as it manifests in user generated social media. Silkscreen allows him to experiment with quick disposable imagery which reflects the kind found throughout the social network. Through paint an expressive style is added over and under certain imagery to capture the speed and intensity of these social media platforms. The pixelated imagery and abstract mark making aim to disrupt any obvious narrative to hold the attention of the viewer forcing them to engage with the piece. The work re-edits the narrative of these social media platforms to create a reconstructed para-social landscape.
During his time at Creative Spark, Mark hopes to sharpen his screenprinting skills and further his practice, build a professional body of work highlighting his time in the residency, and design a booklet which will be distributed in the main library.
